Whitebeams dying along the A40 between Oxford and Witney

Over the last six weeks or so I have noticed the beautiful landscape trees along that corridor of the A40 die back.  First they appeared to simply look unhealthy with withering leaves, and now the trees appear brown and dead. Unfortunately, one cannot stop the car and investigate along that stretch of road.

Does anyone know what is causing this disease and has it been investigated by the Oxford Tree officers?  It is a dreadful eyesore and terribly sad, as over the last 20 years or so those trees have given such pleasure to countless motorists like myself.

The trees may be suffering from anerobic soil conditions, the last two summers have been very wet? watterlogged soil.
