    Turf fertilisers

Fertiliser programmes to build grass strength have become a key issue as costs rise. Mike Beardall reports.

    RE: Turf fertilisers

My father purchased some of this MO Bacter fertiliser and he was very disappointed with the results, he challenged David Jenkins about the poor performance of the product, because the moss didn't disappear, nor did it even die! The response from David Jenkins was that the moss eradicator was a secondary function of the product therefore not guaranteed. I would have thought a lot of people would have bought this product on the illusion that it was supposed to save raking the dead moss up. We have now been left with 11 bags of product as no one wants us to use it on their lawns, plus we had to refund all the customers that had us to use the product on their lawns. Our customers were not happy with it and neither where we!! Plus David Jenkins had the nerve to imply that we couldn't read!! The cheek of the man. Take my advice, don't waste your money!!

I must say Claire I am amazed, I have used this M O Bacter several times and found it to be brilliant. Its done a fantastic job where I have used it. I have found that it is much faster acting in the Spring.

I used MO Bacter last year and nothing happened. I have enough left to try one more application and will keep you posted on the result.

I always try lawn products out on my own lawns first. Mo Bacter worked OK did what the Bumpf said it would do but only on light moss cover in my case.

Used in on a clients heavily mossed lawns and nothing happened and the rate of use is well over the top, a few bags goes nowhere especially for what it costs.

I am wondering if MO Bactor needs watering in. After I spread the product we went into a very dry period of weather. After a couple of weeks, I contacted the suppliers but they assured me that watering was not necessary.

I think that was the mistake I made, not testing it on mine first.  I emailed DJ Turfcare before my dad bought the product and they assured me that the product was tried and tested and even with thick moss there was still no need to scarify, then when we told David Jenkins that the product didn't work he said that moss killing was not the primary function of the product therefore was not a breach of contract and said as he couldn't verify the conditions in which it was applied it was not guaranteed.  Did you by any chance get in contact with them and complain?

Yes please do let us know if it works better if you water it in, we do still have a lot left, not sure if there is a BBE on it.

I only bought one bag, used it on a part of my lawns and the rest on a small area of a clients lawn, Perhaps I should have complained!! Perhaps I will!

If mosskilling is not the primary function what is?  It was sold to me as a mosskiller.

Seems like Mr Jenkins is wriggling a tad!!!

Apparently the primary function is as a fertilliser!! If we'd known he would argue about how the product was applied we would have filmed it!!

I would be interested in what he says to you if you do raise the issue with him.

    Re: RE: Turf fertilisers

Completed my second test with MO Bactor and can confirm that it was a dismal failure. Out of an area of 200sq.metres there was a small patch about the size of two dinner plates where the moss turned grey.

I think that whoever gave this product an award should be taken to task. They should publish the results of any independant tests that were carried out. (or did they just accept the word of the manufacturers and distributers).

There is another company in Belgium that makes a very similar product but they do not claim that it eradicates moss - I wonder why?

There must be a reason why MO Bactor works to eradicate moss on a few lawns but fails on the majority. Is it to do with the ph of the soil?

I think you will find that MO-Bacter is imported from Belgium by DJ turf care.

Perhaps Mr Jenkins would like to prove that it works because a lot of people are spending a lot of money on what appears to be a hit or miss product.

Perhaps he had problems translating the instructions!!

C'mon Mr Jenkins show your face above the parapet and lets hear what you have to say!!

I personally think while he is making good money from this product he will keep quiest
