    Advice on new product launch

Hi everyone I am new here and was just looking for a little help, we have designed, developed and manufactured a new vertical gardening product.

We took the product to both Harrogate and Malvern autumn shows where it was received very well and sales at both shows exceeded our expectations. We are now ready to start wholesaling the product, so my question is what in your opinions would be the best way to go about this, is there a garden centre directory available?

As potential buyers of the product are mail shots effective, or would cold calling by phone or in person be better. We would really like to get the product into the hands of some of the garden columnists, does anyone know of a list that’s available?

Any advice or direction will be really helpful.

    Hi Nick

    Welcome to the forum.

    Looks like a good product.

Two things though worth mentioning, heavy discounting on your website also needs to be given to Garden Centres if you are expecting them to sell your product.

They will not take it too kindly if they are having to sell at a higher price than you are offering on the internet.

And did I notice a Nick Porter on your website home page giving a customer review of this amazing product.

Polhill Garden Centre (North-west Kent/Bromley) is one one of the biggest around SE London. Also Ruxley Garden Centre (Foots Cray) pulls in customers.

    Hi Andrew

Thanks for the reply yes you did notice a Nick Porter on the website I had intended to remove that it was done while testing the site (an oversite) I will get it removed.

Pricing is something we are still working on I don’t suppose you know what the normal mark-up garden centres work on for non perishable goods is do you? We have set the trade prices so there is around 100% mark-up for the garden centres even if they match the discounted website prices.

You could do to contact a company like Solus who deliver nationwide. They could maybe market it for you to the garden centres?

    Hi Nick,

Have you got all the Intellectual Property rights sorted out (Patents, Trademarks, etc?).  If not, do that before you do anything else.  A good IP attorney can help you move forward with your plans as well as sort out all the registration for you.  I recommend Neville Walker at ipconsult. Tel: 08701121802 email: nwalker@ipconsult.co.uk

    Nick

I can help you with promoting the product to journalists - both trade & consumer. I'm currently working with a couple of manufacturers/suppliers, including FIGO Products - a new start-up company who successfully launched at Glee.

Thanks for the advice offered we are busy exploring all the possibilities given on this forum, and have so far booked Stand H22 (3M X 2M), at www.gardenpressevent.co.uk looks like this will be a good platform to get our new product in the eyes of the press. Found this show listed on the www.gima.org.uk website that Matthew recommended.
